What Happened?
The Super Bowl has always been one of the most streamed sporting events each year. Besides the game, fans always love to come together and watch the viral Supple Bowl commercials that are played in between breaks. Each year, companies come out with new ads in hopes to entertain and increase revenue. The Tubi streaming platform had a great idea for a commercial- that just so happened to go the complete wrong way. Just as the sportscasters were welcoming everyone back to the Super Bowl, the commercial was made to where it seemed someone had taken control of the viewers' television in less than 15 seconds and switched to Tubi. The advertisement was so convincing that reports of domestic violence that it triggered have been posted on social media, with the perpetrators of the assault reacting angrily as they saw their TV cut off from the Super Bowl.
Public Relations Point of View
Competing with several other streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu, Tubi has large shoes to fill. During this years Super Bowl, Tubi had two viral commercials. Both gaining popularity, Tubi was not expecting such tragedies to occur with their "prank" commercial. Although this was not the intent Tubi was reaching for, they still must be held responsible and speak up about this happening. This is a topic that can impact Tubi's streaming base forever. It is essential that they recognize this problem and speak on it with the help of public relations in order to clear their name from such a negative connotation.
The Impact
It is quite obvious than Tubi was not expecting such drastic damages to occur following their commercials, but a 15 second ad can easily influence their business. If Tubi does not recognize this mistake, they could easily see more and more problems piling on top of the business. Hopefully, Tubi will make a statement and be able to clear up this situation. Although there is nothing to undo the happenings, Tubi can send their condolences to those who were impacted by this commercial.
